NBA Biodiversity Benefit Sharing Gets ₹1.36 Crore Funds

NBA Biodiversity Benefit Sharing Funds

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has reinforced its commitment to sustainable biodiversity use. In a strong demonstration of its principles, the National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) has officially released ₹1.36 crore in NBA Biodiversity Benefit Sharing Funds. This significant action channels the benefits of commercial biodiversity use directly to local communities in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.

NBA Biodiversity Benefit Sharing

This financial injection is a tangible recognition of the communities who act as essential custodians of India’s biological heritage. It will be delivered through the State Biodiversity Boards of Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. The goal is to strengthen conservation efforts at the grassroots.

Targeting Specific Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs)

The funds are specifically directed to three established Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs). These are key local bodies responsible for documenting and managing local resources. The targeted BMCs are:

  • Sakharwadi village, Phaltan Taluk, Satara District, Maharashtra.
  • Kunjirwadi village, Haveli Taluk, Pune, Maharashtra.
  • Kasganj area, Etah District, Uttar Pradesh.

Each of these BMCs will receive a substantial amount of ₹45.50 lakhs. This focused allocation underscores the Government’s unwavering commitment to the principles of equity, sustainability, and effective local conservation.

NBA Biodiversity Benefit Sharing  in Action

The released amount is a direct result of an Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) agreement. The payment was triggered after a commercial entity accessed specific resources. This entity used microorganisms found in soil and industrial effluent samples. The raw materials were utilized for producing Fructo-oligosaccharides products.

These resources highlight the value of India’s microbial wealth. The generated funds are slated for activities outlined under Section 44 of the Biological Diversity Act 2002. You can read more about how these funds are deployed by the Authority on the NBA’s official information page.

Global Alignment for Sustainable Governance

This financial strategy confirms the NBA’s proactive role in rewarding local communities. By pushing accrued benefits back to the local level, the NBA strengthens India’s model for an inclusive governance framework. It ensures conservation and community prosperity advance together.

The successful implementation of the NBA Biodiversity Benefit Sharing Funds also fulfils a key national goal. It meets National Biodiversity Target – 13 of India’s updated NBSAP 2024-2030. This aligns directly with the globally recognized Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). This landmark framework was adopted at CoP-15 of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
