Resumption marks a new chapter in strengthening travel, trade, and people-to-people connections between the two nations.
Direct commercial flights between India and China officially resumed today after a gap of five years. The development marks a significant step in restoring normal travel and trade links between the two neighbouring Asian nations. Indian Consul General in Shanghai, Pratik Mathur, welcomed the first group of passengers arriving from New Delhi.
He said that the resumption of flights symbolizes the revival of people-to-people ties and greater connectivity between both countries. In a statement shared on social media, the Indian Consulate in Shanghai said India continues to emerge as a Global Hub.
The statement added that India-China air connectivity will play a vital role in promoting tourism, business exchanges, and academic collaborations. Commercial flight operations had been suspended since early 2020 following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The suspension was extended amid border tensions, limiting bilateral travel and business opportunities for citizens of both nations. The restoration of direct flights reflects renewed diplomatic engagement and a growing effort to normalize bilateral relations.
Airlines from both countries are expected to gradually expand operations in the coming months to meet rising passenger demand. The direct route between New Delhi and Shanghai is expected to reduce travel time and improve logistics for business travelers.
The aviation sector anticipates increased movement of students, professionals, and entrepreneurs, fostering stronger economic and cultural ties. The decision aligns with India’s broader push to enhance connectivity and global integration across Asia.
Industry experts believe the move will contribute to regional economic stability, boost tourism, and encourage new business partnerships. The return of commercial air connectivity marks an important diplomatic and economic milestone after years of disruption. Both nations are now expected to build upon this momentum to advance cooperation in trade, investment, and innovation.
