Arunachal Pradesh Coal Mine Launch To Create History

Arunachal Pradesh Coal Mine at Namchik-Namphuk

Arunachal Pradesh is set to witnesse a historic day today. The state celebrates the launch of its first commercial coal mine at the Namchik-Namphuk coal block. This significant event immediately marks a new chapter for the state. It promises growth, enhanced energy security, and local prosperity. Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy leads the ceremonies earlier today, first performing the Bhoomi Poojan, and then formally handing over the mining lease documents. Following this, he flags off the tools and machineries of CPPL to the central coal block. The day concluded with a tree plantation drive. This action formed part of the 100-tree plantation initiative.

Revived Project Unlocks ₹100 Crore in State Revenue

The Namchik-Namphuk coal block holds vast resources. It contains reserves of 1.5 crore tonnes. The government first allocated the block in 2003. However, the project faced long delays and multiple stoppages due to various challenges. A transparent auction process successfully revived the mine in 2022. This decisive action immediately ended years of costly delays. It also opened the doors for crucial private sector entry. This initiative carries forward Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s EAST vision: Empower, Act, Strengthen, Transform. This philosophy guides every initiative in the Northeast.

Arunachal Pradesh now formally joins India’s major coal journey. India ranks as the world’s second-largest coal producer. It crossed a record 1 billion tonnes of production last year. The coal mine is expected to generate over ₹100 crore annually as state revenue. This influx will create essential jobs and prosperity for local youth. The launch signals an end to illegal mining practices. It halts the exploitation and wastage of state resources. Transparency and accountability now directly benefit the local people.

Commitment to Sustainable Mining and Regional Growth

The Government confirms its absolute commitment to ecology. Mining in the Northeast will face no compromise with ecology. The region, famous for its green valleys and strong communities, will become a global model for sustainable mining practices. The coal sector already shows strong results nationwide. It has reclaimed 57,000 hectares of land. It commits to reclaiming 16,000 hectares more by 2030 under Mission Green Coal Regions. Mining now acts as an economic, ecological, and community responsibility. The success depends on Jan Bhagidaari (people’s participation).

The Northeast has seen rapid transformation over the past 11 years. The region witnessed investments exceeding ₹6 lakh crore. Arunachal Pradesh alone saw allocations rise sixteen-fold, reaching ₹1 lakh crore post-2014. The government achieved a connectivity revolution through massive infrastructure projects.

The Arunachal Pradesh Coal Mine Launch embodies this integration of development and Jan Bhagidaari. This effort positions the Northeast as the Ashtalakshmi region, central to Viksit Bharat (Developed India). The Ashtalakshmi region is a term used by the Indian government to refer to the eight states of Northeast India—Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Sikkim—symbolizing their collective potential for wealth and prosperity, similar to the eight forms of the goddess Lakshmi.
