India expands global leadership in telecommunications standardisation at WTSA-2024
India has made significant strides in its leadership within the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) Standardization Sector (ITU-T), securing leadership roles in all 10 Study Groups at the ongoing World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA) 2024. With one chair position in Study Group 11 (SG11) and 10 vice-chair positions across various groups, India’s leadership positions have increased from 7 at WTSA-2022 to 11 at WTSA-2024. This achievement underscores India’s growing influence in shaping global telecommunications standards.
Held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, WTSA-2024 marks the first time the event is being hosted in the Asia-Pacific region. Inaugurated by the Prime Minister, the assembly is witnessing participation from over 160 countries and more than 3,700 delegates, the highest in WTSA history. The conference, running from 15th to 24th October, focuses on shaping international standards for emerging technologies, including Digital Public Infrastructure, Artificial Intelligence, Metaverse, and Sustainable Digital Transformation.
India’s leadership roles are a recognition of its contributions to global telecom standards, and they position the country as a pivotal player in advancing the ITU-T’s mission to create a connected, secure, and inclusive digital world. The work carried out by ITU-T’s Study Groups will be instrumental in developing global telecommunications standards over the next four years, addressing key areas such as cybersecurity, future networks, smart cities, and the Internet of Things (IoT).
This achievement is a testament to India’s technological leadership and its commitment to contributing to global standards in telecommunications.
