APEDA’s agri-exports skyrocket from USD 0.6B to USD 26.7B

From humble beginnings with exports of USD 0.6 billion in FY 1987-88, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has propelled India’s agricultural exports to a remarkable USD 26.7 billion in FY 2022-23. This exponential growth is highlighted by an expanded export basket to over 200 countries, reflecting a remarkable Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 12%.
In FY 2022-23, India’s agricultural exports soared to USD 53.1 billion, with APEDA contributing a significant 51% share. During April-December 2023, 18 out of 23 Principal Commodities (PCs) in APEDA’s export basket experienced positive growth. Notably, fresh fruits and processed vegetables stood out with growth rates of 29% and 24% respectively. Basmati Rice, Fresh Vegetables, and Miscellaneous processed items also witnessed substantial growth. India’s fresh fruits export footprint expanded to 111 countries from 102 in the previous year.
On its 38th Foundation Day on 13.02.2024, APEDA celebrated its journey of fostering agricultural exports, achieving significant milestones, and unprecedented growth. Established in 1986 to promote agricultural product exports, APEDA has emerged as a pivotal force in catapulting India’s agricultural exports to new heights.
During April-November 2023, key commodities like Bananas, Lentils, Fresh Eggs, Kesar, and Dasheri Mango witnessed substantial growth compared to the previous year. Basmati rice exports surged by 19% to USD 3.97 billion, with an 11% increase in quantity. Top markets for Basmati rice include Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the USA, and the UAE, underscoring its enduring popularity and global demand.
