Domestic air passenger traffic surges 11% to 140.44 lakh, reports DGCA

India’s domestic air passenger traffic saw a notable increase of 11.04% in February 2024, reaching 140.44 lakh passengers, according to the latest data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
This growth marks a significant rise from the 126.48 lakh domestic passengers flown in February 2023.
In terms of market share, IndiGo led the pack, carrying 89.40 lakh passengers, which accounted for a dominant 63.7% of the market. The Air India Group followed closely, transporting 38.30 lakh passengers and capturing 27.3% of the market share.
Air India’s performance comes on the heels of its recent consolidation efforts, including the merger of AIX Connect with Air India Express in October and the integration of Vistara with Air India in November.
Other major airlines, such as SpiceJet and Akasa Air, also contributed to the positive trend. SpiceJet flew 6.59 lakh passengers, securing 3.2% of the domestic market, while Akasa Air carried 4.54 lakh passengers, holding a 4.7% market share.
In related news, the DGCA has advised airlines to regularly inspect the serviceability of seats to ensure passenger safety and comfort.
