Government gears up to implement scheme for affordable rental housing complexes

Union cabinet has informed that a draft Operational Guidelines of affordable rental housing complexes together with its framework for implementation has been circulated to implement scheme for affordable rental housing complexes, besides uploading e-copy of the guidelines on the website of affordable rental housing scheme under PMAY-U.

It has further issued a model request for proposal with states and UTs to develop vacant housing complexes funded by government in the format to be used as rental housing for twenty five years under RDOT (repair or retrofit, develop, operate and then transfer) in PPP mode. Moreover, it has estimated Rs. 600 crore as total outlay of this scheme till March 2022.

The union government has envisaged the scheme will benefit over 2.95 lakh beneficiaries initially. According to Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of State (I/C), Housing and Urban Affairs it is throughModel-1, about 75,000 existing vacant housing complexes (Government funded) are targeted for converting them into ARHCs while in Model-2 new construction of 40,000 bedroom houses (single/double), besides 1,80,000 dormitory beds are targeted and they will be operationalised using alternate and innovative technologies.
