India’s first PC Vaccine Pneumosil developed by Serum Institute gets unveiled

The country’s first pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV), “Pneumosil” developed by Serum Institute of India (SIIPL) together with Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation was unveiled today. Inaugurating the vaccine, Health and Family Welfare minister Dr Harsh Vardhan said, SIIPL got license of first indigenous PCV from the Government during COVID-19 induced lockdown.
The vaccine will be available at an affordable price in multidose and single dose presentations. Evaluated extensively in five clinical trials, the vaccine has demonstrated immunogenicity when administered to toddlers, infants and adults using different vaccination schedules. The vaccine was found effective and safe in prevention of Pneumonia.
Dr. Harsh Vardhan said, the vaccine Pneumosil demonstrates the country’s capability in research, development and manufacturing of high-end sophisticated vaccines and it’s a historical milestone amid COVID-19 pandemic as earlier we were dependent on such vaccines manufactured by foreign manufacturers and they were available at high price. The indigenous vaccine is also a step towards being vocal for local.
