The Khadi and village industries sector has achieved impressive growth in 2024-25, according to the Ministry of MSME. Khadi has been an integral part of India’s history, especially during the freedom struggle led by Mahatma Gandhi. Khadi, made from hand-spun and hand-woven fabric, became synonymous with the Indian freedom movement. The concept of village industries also evolved alongside Khadi, aimed at promoting rural self-sufficiency and providing employment in rural areas.

The Khadi and village industries sector has grown in both scale and significance. From being an important symbol of national pride, it has evolved into a major player in rural development and employment generation. Today, Khadi and village industries contribute significantly to India’s rural economy, providing livelihoods to millions and promoting sustainable, eco-friendly production.

Looking ahead, the Khadi and village industries sector is poised for further growth. The government’s focus on rural development and the promotion of local craftsmanship is expected to drive further expansion. With increasing awareness of sustainability and eco-friendly products, Khadi is likely to see a surge in demand, especially among younger generations and environmentally-conscious consumers.

Moreover, as global interest in handmade and organic products rises, the potential for Khadi to gain a larger share of the international market is significant. The sector’s export potential is expected to grow, supported by ongoing efforts to modernize production techniques while preserving traditional craftsmanship.

Finally, the future of Khadi and village industries largely depends on leveraging modern technology and improving infrastructure, the sector can reach new heights. Enhanced marketing strategies, better access to global markets, and further government initiatives are set to ensure that Khadi continues to thrive as both a heritage and a modern product line. The industry’s role in job creation and rural empowerment will remain a key driver of its success in the years to come.
