NHAI launches monsoon readiness drive to tackle flood risks on National Highways

With the monsoon season approaching, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated a proactive nationwide drive to mitigate risks of flooding and waterlogging across critical stretches of National Highways.
The 15-day intensive inspection campaign involves coordinated efforts by NHAI officials, contractors, and consultants to identify vulnerable areas prone to water accumulation or structural damage during heavy rains. The exercise aims to strengthen road safety and ensure uninterrupted traffic flow through preventive maintenance and rapid response measures.
As part of the initiative, rainwater harvesting systems are being thoroughly cleaned and desilted, while culverts, cross drains, and weep holes are being cleared to maintain effective drainage. The authority is also prioritising the repair of potholes on diversions, slip roads, and main carriageways, particularly in flood-prone zones.
Emergency resources, including excavators, sandbags, signage, and other equipment, are being strategically deployed at critical locations to swiftly address any waterlogging issues and maintain highway connectivity during adverse weather conditions.
NHAI said these efforts form part of its multi-pronged strategy to enhance highway resilience and passenger safety during the monsoon months.
