New Delhi: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has issued a fresh directive. The highway authority has ordered the swift development of dedicated vehicle repair and puncture repair facilities at all Wayside Amenities (WSAs) nationwide. It is a major push to improve commuter safety and streamline logistics across India’s national highways and expressways.
The National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML) is spearheading this initiative. NHLML is a wholly-owned subsidiary of NHAI. The primary objective is to build a robust safety net of immediate roadside assistance. Both everyday commuters and long-haul freight operators will benefit from it.
Directives Issued to Field Offices and Lessees
NHLML has instructed its regional and field offices to officially advise all WSA lessees to prioritise setting up mechanical repair shops. This will ensure rapid execution on the ground.
Expected Immediate Benefits:
-
Reduced Downtime: Quick access to mechanics will drastically cut down waiting times for stranded vehicles.
-
Enhanced Road Safety: Stationary broken-down vehicles on high-speed expressways pose a major accident hazard. Fixing them quickly keeps traffic lanes clear.
-
Emergency Support: Commuters facing unexpected tyre punctures or mechanical glitches will no longer be left stranded in remote highway stretches.
The Need for Reform: The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) highlighted that a lack of readily available mechanical assistance remains a major pain point on several newly opened national highways. It frequently causes severe travel delays and commuter anxiety.
Turning Wayside Amenities Into One-Stop Service Hubs
The inclusion of mechanical services falls directly in line with how modern highway architecture is being re-imagined in India.
Currently, NHLML is rolling out a massive network of state-of-the-art Wayside Amenities under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model using long-term lease structures. These spaces already feature mandatory facilities like food courts, clean restrooms, and fuel stations. The contractual framework gives concessionaires the flexibility to add allied commercial services.
Vehicle repair workshops and tyre-puncture centers are among the pre-approved commercial additions that lessees can instantly monetise. By integrating these services, NHAI intends to transform standard rest stops into comprehensive, one-stop support hubs for passenger cars and commercial trucks alike.
According to senior NHAI officials, this user-centric upgrade underscores the government’s commitment to building smart, efficient, and reliable economic corridors that match evolving global standards.
