NEW DELHI. Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal today launched the official website for the upcoming Bharat Vyapar Mahotsav. Speaking at a national conclave of trade leaders at Bharat Mandapam, he outlined a vision for India’s export target. He expressed confidence that the mega trade fair will significantly scale up indigenous goods and strengthen import substitution. Bharat Mandapam will host the exposition from August 12 to 15, 2026. Organised by the India Trade Promotion Organisation and the Confederation of All India Traders, the event promotes a Swadeshi agenda. Goyal noted that with 140 crore citizens united, the nation will successfully expand its presence in global markets.
Rising Trade Figures and Upcoming Strategic Agreements
The minister shared updated trade data showing that India’s exports have already risen to USD 863 billion this year. This figure marks a steady 5 per cent increase compared to the previous year’s performance. Consequently, the government has officially raised the trade milestone to USD 1 trillion for the current fiscal year. To support India’s export target of USD 2 trillion over five years, the ministry is negotiating diverse pacts. Active free trade agreement discussions are currently underway with 38 countries, focusing primarily on developed economies. These agreements aim to provide domestic exporters with preferential market access through significantly lower import duties. Goyal highlighted that the free trade agreement with Oman is expected to come into effect on June 1.
Focus on Quality Standards and Value Addition
Goyal emphasised that achieving long-term trade milestones requires a massive shift toward higher product quality and better packaging. Without these improvements, domestic enterprises will struggle to capture highly competitive global markets effectively. The minister pointed out that agricultural and fisheries exports have already crossed nearly ₹5 lakh crore. However, he noted that value addition in these specific primary sectors remains relatively low. Young entrepreneurs received an invitation to establish modern manufacturing and processing units to capture these untapped opportunities. The government has also expanded the definition of MSMEs to include enterprises with a turnover up to ₹500 crore.
