Power Grid’s Green Project Underway in Andhra Pradesh

Power Grid's Green Project

The ambitious development of India’s ‘Green Grid’ received a significant impetus this week with the formal initiation of a major transmission system strengthening project in Andhra Pradesh. On October 16, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially laid the foundation stone for the Power Grid Transmission Andhra project at the crucial Kurnool-III Pooling Station, marking the beginning of a key infrastructure undertaking by the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL). This massive initiative, valued at an estimated Rs 2,886 crore, is strategically vital for facilitating the seamless integration of burgeoning renewable energy (RE) generation into the national power grid, reinforcing India’s commitment to a sustainable energy transition.

The ceremony, which took place in the presence of key state dignitaries including the Governor of Andhra Pradesh, S Abdul Nazeer, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, and Deputy Chief Minister Konidala Pawan Kalyan, underscored the collaborative push between the Central and State governments to enhance regional power infrastructure. The entire project is centered around the construction of a 765 kV double-circuit transmission line connecting the Kurnool-III Pooling Station to Chilakaluripeta. This high-capacity transmission corridor is designed not merely to transfer power, but to fundamentally upgrade the grid’s capability to handle future green power surges.

Crucially, the new transmission system is expected to enhance transformation capacity by a substantial 6,000 MVA. This capacity augmentation is specifically aimed at enabling the large-scale evacuation of renewable energy—principally from forthcoming solar and wind generation projects across the resource-rich region of Andhra Pradesh. By strengthening the national transmission network in this manner, PGCIL, a Maharatna Central Public Sector Undertaking (CPSU) under the Ministry of Power, directly addresses the grid bottlenecks that often impede the full utilisation of clean energy sources. The successful and timely completion of this project is paramount for achieving the nation’s ambitious renewable energy targets and maintaining grid stability amidst fluctuating energy inputs.

The detailed planning and swift execution, as demonstrated by the rapid follow-up to the foundation stone laying, cement Power Grid’s reputation as a key enabler of sustainable growth. The financial outlay and technical specifications confirm the project’s strategic importance, positioning it as a cornerstone for reliable power supply in Southern India. As of October 18, 2025, with the foundational ceremony complete and groundwork expected to accelerate, the Kurnool-III project is set to become a tangible symbol of India’s enduring pursuit of a greener and more resilient energy future, moving beyond core thermal power generation towards integrated, efficient, and renewable energy distribution. The commitment to delivering this complex project highlights the nation’s focus on securing energy independence and meeting its global climate change obligations effectively.
