Sarbananda Sonowal launches major sustainability and infrastructure initiatives at JN Port
In a nod to Maharashtra’s cultural heritage, these lakes have been named after revered saints—Dnyaneshwar Maharaj, Eknath Maharaj, and Namdeo Maharaj. Sonowal highlighted the importance of these projects, stating that ports are crucial national assets driving India’s economic growth. The focus on sustainable development aligns with the vision of a self-reliant India under the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.
During the event, Sonowal also participated in the signing of two key Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs). The first MoU, involving the JN Port Authority (JNPA), Rural Electrification Corporation (REC), and Vadhavan Port, aims to secure financing for critical infrastructure projects. The second MoU, between JNPA and Gateway Terminals India (GTI), focuses on enhancing the port’s sustainable power supply for vessels.
Sonowal also led the groundbreaking ceremony for the Smart Special Economic Zone (SEZ) project, which is poised to transform port operations through advanced technologies. This project aims to improve security, optimize vehicle movement, and extend network connectivity throughout the port, supporting future initiatives such as an Energy Management System, Smart Water Management, and Smart Street Lighting.
In addition, the minister launched the Vadhavan Skilling Program’s WhatsApp ChatBot, designed by JNPA to provide local communities with access to skilling programs and information about Vadhavan Port. This initiative is expected to create around 1 million employment opportunities.
JNPA’s ongoing strategic initiatives continue to yield positive results, with the recent e-auction of Phase 7 plots generating a 95.23% increase in quoted value above the reserve price, significantly boosting the port’s revenue.
Sonowal reiterated the government’s commitment to sustainable growth, stating that the ministry is focused on ensuring that India’s ports not only contribute to economic progress but also uphold environmental responsibility for future generations.
These developments mark a significant milestone in enhancing India’s maritime capabilities, reinforcing the nation’s role in global supply chains, and promoting sustainable practices within the shipping and port sectors.
