DRDO successfully conducts Flight Test of new generation AKASH Missile off Odisha coast

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) achieved a significant milestone with the successful flight test of the New Generation AKASH (AKASH-NG) missile from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha. The test, conducted at 1030 hrs on January 12, 2024, saw the missile intercept and destroy a high-speed unmanned aerial target flying at a very low altitude.

The flight test validated the complete weapon system, which includes the missile with an indigenously developed Radio Frequency Seeker, Launcher, Multi-Function Radar, and Command, Control & Communication system. The system’s performance was further confirmed through data captured by a range of Radars, Telemetry, and Electro Optical Tracking Systems deployed by ITR, Chandipur.

The successful test was witnessed by senior officials from DRDO, the Indian Air Force (IAF), Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). The AKASH-NG system represents a cutting-edge missile system capable of intercepting high-speed, agile aerial threats, and this successful flight test marks a significant step towards its user trials.

Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh commended DRDO, IAF, PSUs, and the industry for their contributions to the successful flight test, emphasizing that the development of the AKASH-NG system will bolster the country’s air defence capabilities. Secretary, Department of Defence R&D, and Chairman, DRDO, Dr. Samir V Kamat, also extended his congratulations to the teams involved in the successful flight test of the AKASH-NG.
