Navi Mumbai: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has officially launched the ‘Bharat Taxi’ platform in Maharashtra.
The high-profile event took place at Navi Mumbai International Airport in the presence of Union Minister of State for Cooperation Murlidhar Mohol. This rollout marks the expansion of cooperative mobility into the state following earlier launches across Delhi and Gujarat. Operating under the Centre’s Sahakar Se Samriddhi vision, the driver-owned platform systematically eliminates commercial intermediaries from the traditional ride-hailing market.
Transforming Drivers into Shareholders and Owners
Unlike conventional, corporate app-based aggregators, Bharat Taxi operates on an institutional ownership model. The cooperative structure transforms drivers, designated as Sarathis, directly into institutional members, shareholders, and co-owners.
During his keynote address, CM Fadnavis emphasized that the platform offers a transparent alternative to private aggregators. Specifically, the service completely eliminates surge pricing, removes hidden fees, and operates strictly on a low, fixed service-fee framework.
Key Operational Pillars of Bharat Taxi:
Profit Distribution: Shares net operational returns directly with driver-members.
Rider Guarantees: Provides transparent, surge-free fare structures for passengers.
Local Youth Credit: Offers targeted vehicle credit support to 3,000 to 4,000 local youth.
Safety Standards: Prioritises transparent tracking and dedicated safety features for women.
Additionally, the state finalised an agreement with the late D. B. Patil Cooperative Transport Association. This agreement provides direct credit support to help local youth near Navi Mumbai Airport purchase vehicles and join the platform.
Expanding the National Cooperative Movement
Speaking at the launch, Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol highlighted Maharashtra’s dominant position within the national cooperative ecosystem.
Nationwide Cooperative Network: [ Total Societies: 8.6 Lakh+ ]
Maharashtra Cooperative Share: [ State Network: 2.5 Lakh ] ──▶ 29% National Share
He noted that Maharashtra houses nearly 2.5 lakh of the country’s 8.6 lakh registered cooperative societies. Since its creation in 2021, the Ministry of Cooperation has introduced over 152 major reforms to strengthen rural credit networks and primary agricultural societies.
Furthermore, the minister outlined broader national initiatives, including the computerisation of Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) backed by a ₹3,000-crore investment. Across the country, PACS now operate petrol pumps, Jan Aushadhi Kendras, and grain storage hubs.

To support these efforts, three national bodies—BBSSL, NCOL, and NCEL—now assist nearly 70,000 member institutions with seed supply, organic certification, and agricultural exports.
In Maharashtra, the National Cooperative Development Corporation has extended nearly ₹10,000 crore to support cooperative sugar mills and ethanol projects. Moving forward, authorities will expand Bharat Taxi across Maharashtra in phased rollouts by partnering with local transport unions, youth groups, and women’s cooperatives.
