DRIP project worth Rs 10, 211 Cr approved to ensure safety and rehabilitation of dams

The Union Cabinet has approved the second and third phases of the nationwide dam rehabilitation and improvement (DRIP) project to ensure safety, rehabilitation, and improvement of dams. The project with a budget outlay of Rs 10,211 crore is aimed at funding physical rehabilitation of dams to ensure water security, support and sustainable development simultaneously with creating employment opportunities. The project to be implemented in two phases will have a tenure of ten years.

India has Β 5334 large dams in operation, besides 411 dams are under construction at present. There are also several thousand smaller dams. These dams are necessary for ensuring the water security of the Country. However, the consequences of the failure of dams can be disastrous in terms of the massive loss of lives and property.

The second and third phases of DRIP has been approved to ensure rehabilitation and capacity building of these dams. DRIP phase two has been co-financed by Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and the World Bank with US$250 million each and it includes large dams across nineteen states pan-India.

The first phase of the DRIP program has covered 223 dams in seven states and brought in considerable improvement in operational performance and safety. The program covers structural and non-structural measures to ensure the efficiency of these dams. These include hydro-mechanical measures, hydrologic safety, structural stability, seepage reduction, emergency action plans, dam break analyses, etc.
