Domestic Airlines witness robust passenger growth

Domestic airlines in India experienced a remarkable annual growth rate of 36.10% and a monthly growth rate of 15.24% in passenger numbers.

From January to May 2023, domestic airlines carried a total of 636.07 lakhs (6.36 million) passengers, signifying a substantial increase compared to the same period in the previous year (Jan-May 2022) when the count stood at 467.37 lakhs (4.67 million).

In May 2023, the passenger count reached 132.41 lakhs (1.32 million), exhibiting a month-on-month growth of 15.24% compared to April 2023.

During the period of January-May 2023, IndiGo, Vistara, and AirAsia expanded their market share, further strengthening the civil aviation sector.

The impressive growth in the number of passengers highlights the robustness of India’s aviation industry, showcasing improved connectivity and convenient travel options for citizens. The consistently high load factor during January-May 2023 indicates a rising demand for air transportation, indicating a positive trajectory for the aviation sector.

Compared to May 2019, the number of passenger complaints received by scheduled domestic airlines in May 2023 decreased from 746 to 556, indicating an enhanced customer experience.

Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Union Minister of Civil Aviation and Steel, praised the collective efforts of stakeholders and emphasized the growth potential of the aviation sector. The Ministry remains committed to promoting sustainable growth while ensuring the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and passenger satisfaction.

This achievement reflects the meticulous planning, operational effectiveness, and proactive measures undertaken by the industry, demonstrating resilience in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic and the provision of improved air services.
