Jakarta / New Delhi: India and Indonesia have officially signed a strategic agreement for cooperation in critical minerals and advanced steel supply chain technologies. It marks a major diplomatic breakthrough aimed at insulating manufacturing corridors from global geopolitical upheavals,
The pact was finalized during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s high-profile official state visit to Jakarta, where he was warmly received at the Istana Merdeka by the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto. The agreement anchors a broader slate of 14 comprehensive bilateral agreements to heavily fortify trade, resource security, and defence alignment under the framework of the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Deepening the Critical Minerals and Steel Supply Chain
The newly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on minerals and steel technology establishes a direct legal pipeline for technical and resource exchange between the two maritime neighbours.
Why Critical Minerals Matter:
Electric vehicles (EVs), renewable energy infrastructure, and advanced electronics are some of the growing sectors worldwide. Securing untrammeled access to critical minerals—such as nickel, cobalt, and lithium—has become a national security priority. Indonesia holds some of the world’s largest reserves of these specialized elements, making it an indispensable partner for India’s high-tech manufacturing growth.
Parallelly, the tech-sharing framework will allow both nations to modernize their domestic steel infrastructure, optimizing supply logistics, reducing carbon intensity, and standardizing high-end metallurgy processes.
The SAIL and PT Krakatau Steel Joint Venture
Translating the government-level pact into immediate corporate action, PM Modi and President Prabowo Subianto formally welcomed a massive Strategic Joint Venture between state-run giants:

• Stainless-Steel Slab Manufacturing Facility
• Combining Scale, Extraction, and Technology
SAIL operates as India’s largest public sector steel manufacturing player with a staggering annual production capacity exceeding 20 million tonnes. It will pool resources with PT Krakatau Steel. The joint venture will actively explore the establishment of a cutting-edge stainless-steel slab manufacturing facility located in Indonesia. The JV will effectively combine India’s heavy manufacturing prowess with Indonesia’s mineral-rich industrial zones.
A Multi-Sector Diplomatic Blueprint
The critical minerals treaty is part of a massive 14-agreement diplomatic suite signed during PM Modi’s tour to reinforce regional stability, which builds upon President Prabowo’s earlier visit to India as the Chief Guest for the 76th Republic Day celebrations.
Beyond heavy metals and industrial refining, the two leaders locked in comprehensive cross-border treaties spanning:
⚓ Maritime Security: Protecting crucial Indo-Pacific trade channels and enhancing joint naval patrol coordination under India’s MAHASAGAR vision.
🚀 Space Cooperation: Deepening institutional research and data-sharing for outer space exploration and satellite technology between ISRO and its Indonesian counterpart.
📱 Telecommunications & Innovation: Aligning cross-border digital infrastructure and research frameworks.
🌾 Essential Needs: Finalizing structural pacts across public health, advanced medicines, academic education, and mutual food security.
During the summit, President Prabowo also conveyed Indonesia’s full support for India’s ongoing Presidency of the BRICS, cementing closer geopolitical convergence between the two democracies.
