Indian Mango exports soar, USA sees 19% increase in 2023-24

In a significant development, India’s mango export industry has expanded its horizons, achieving remarkable results in the first five months of the fiscal year 2023-24. With the dedicated efforts of the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, India has recorded substantial growth in mango exports, amounting to USD 47.98 million. This marks a notable 19 percent increase compared to the previous year’s figure of USD 40.33 million for the same period.

Collaborating with the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, APEDA facilitated the export of 22,963.78 metric tons (MT) of mangoes, valued at USD 48.53 million in 2022-23. The momentum continued into the current fiscal year (April-August), with India exporting 27,330.02 MT of mangoes, generating USD 47.98 million in revenue. As part of its endeavor to promote mango exports for the 2023 season, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and APEDA invited the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) inspector to conduct preclearance checks at irradiation facilities in Vashi, Nashik, Bangalore, and Ahmedabad.

A major triumph for India lies in the export of Indian mangoes to the USA, where it has witnessed a 19 percent growth compared to the previous fiscal year. India exported 2,043.60 MT of Indian mangoes to the USA in the first five months of the current fiscal.

In addition to the USA, India has made continuous efforts to export mangoes to various destinations, including 43.08 MT to Japan, 110.99 MT to New Zealand, 58.42 MT to Australia, and 4.44 MT to South Africa—a new and emerging market.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and APEDA jointly invited inspectors from South Korea to conduct preclearance checks for mango exports. This initiative has enabled India to export 18.43 MT of mangoes treated at the authorized Vapour Heat Treatment facility, under the joint supervision of the Directorate of Plant Protection, Quarantine, and Storage (DPPQS), India, and the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency (APQA) of South Korea.

The export of mangoes showed a remarkable increase in 2022-23. In the 2023 season, India expanded its reach to 41 countries, exploring new markets such as Iran, Mauritius, the Czech Republic, and Nigeria.

To promote Indian mango exports, APEDA participated in the Seoul Food & Hotel Show, showcasing the variety of mangoes. In commemoration of India’s 75th year of Independence (Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav), APEDA facilitated the export of 75 eastern mango varieties to Bahrain, including five GI-tagged varieties from the eastern region of India.

Additionally, APEDA organized mango promotion programs and festivals in collaboration with Indian Missions in various countries to boost the export of Indian mangoes. Mango tasting events were held, featuring varieties like Amrapalli, Banganapalli, Kesar, and Himsagar, accompanied by mango lassi and mango pudding.

Throughout 2023, APEDA undertook several initiatives to promote Indian mango exports to various international markets. In Malaysia, APEDA collaborated with the High Commission of India, Kuala Lumpur, to showcase Kesar and Banganapalli mango varieties. APEDA also facilitated mango consignments for promotion programs in Afghanistan through the Embassy of India, Kabul, and in Kuwait in partnership with the Embassies of India, Kuwait.
