Government e-Marketplace (GeM) soars to new Heights in Service Procurement
The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has been making remarkable strides in the procurement of services, demonstrating its dedication to streamlining government purchasing processes and enhancing transparency. Over the past few years, GeM has seen an extraordinary increase in transaction value, underlining its commitment to efficiency and transparency in government procurement.
GeM’s growth in service procurement is nothing short of astounding. Transaction value has surged from around INR 8,505 crore in FY 20-21 to a staggering INR 65,957 crore in FY 22-23. The services sector’s contribution to GeM Gross Merchandise Value has increased from 23% in FY 21-22 to nearly 47% in the current fiscal year, with GeM setting a forward-looking target of surpassing INR 1.50 lakh crore this fiscal year.
This success can be attributed to the active involvement of top Government buyers and various Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) like Coal India Limited, NTPC Limited, ONGC Limited, and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited. Additionally, multiple states and union territories have embraced GeM as their primary platform for services procurement.
GeM offers a diverse range of services across various categories, including manpower outsourcing, vehicle hiring, handling, transport & other mining services, insurance, IT services, local chemist empanelment, medical services, and more. GeM actively supports the implementation of various government schemes and has facilitated unique service orders, such as hiring chartered aircraft, air international logistics, and drone as a service for surveying and mapping.
The platform continues to drive high-value service bids in areas such as ATM management, energy audit services, GIS survey, warehousing services, and more. GeM’s remarkable growth in service procurement exemplifies its pivotal role in modernizing government procurement and fostering efficiency in the Indian public sector.
