Madhya Pradesh to get central fund for providing tap water to rural households

After Madhya Pradesh presented its Annual Action Plan (AAP) under Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), it’s likely to receive Rs 3000 crore in 2021-22 to provide tap water to every rural household in the state. Currently, there is a month-long planning exercise underway. The planning involves presenting an annual action plan to the committee chaired by the Secretary of the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation under the Ministry of Jal Shakti. The plan shall also be reviewed by members from different Central Ministries, Departments and NITI Aayog.
Out of a total of 1.23 crore rural households in Madhya Pradesh, 37.69 lakh households have tap water supply in their homes. The national committee has advised the state to particularly give emphasis to increase the coverage in priority areas. The state has already accredited 28 water testing laboratories and it also has plans to get accreditation from NABL for 23 district labs out of the total 51 in 2021-22.
To achieve overall drinking water security in villages, MP has prepared State Action Plan to provide tap water connection to 100% of rural households. The state needs to expedite the works during this challenging time of pandemic when it has become very important to resolve water scarcity or contamination issues in rural homes. While clean water will be promoting better hygiene, a functional tap in the premises of the household will ensure social distancing by steering clear of crowding seen at public stand posts. Thus, it is required for the state to expedite the required works during the challenging time of the pandemic.
