Registration data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) on Friday, 6 November 2026, presents a nuanced picture of domestic vehicle performance. Total registrations for October 2026 auto sales declined 23.80 per cent year-on-year to 31,72,466 units. However, overall monthly retail volume expanded 25.05 per cent compared to September 2026, demonstrating resilient sequential momentum across key regional markets.
Industry leadership noted that the year-on-year contraction stems almost entirely from a high statistical base and shifting festive dates. In October 2025, both Navratri and Diwali coincided within the same month alongside federal tax cuts, whereas major festive shopping dates shifted into November for the current cycle. Consequently, the period still marked the second-highest total vehicle retail volume on record for the month of October.

Segmental Milestones and Commercial Vehicle Gains
Despite headline contractions in mass-market two-wheelers, specific categories logged historic performance milestones. Commercial vehicle registrations reached a record October high of 1,15,140 units, growing 2.29 per cent year-on-year and 11.19 per cent sequentially over September. Heavy commercial vehicles led the segment with a 28.95 per cent surge, reflecting ongoing public infrastructure execution and freight demand.
Similarly, electric vehicle (EV) registrations emerged as a primary growth driver across urban hubs. Clean energy vehicle registrations reached an all-time high of approximately 3.55 lakh units, marking a 44.88 per cent year-on-year expansion. Clean energy penetration reached 11.5 per cent of overall vehicle retail during the month, supported by rapid adoption in three-wheelers and commercial fleets.

Dealer Inventory Pressures and Festive Demand Realities
While passenger vehicle registrations reached 5,07,768 units—making it the third-best October on record—dealers continue to report elevated stock levels. Dealer inventory levels remained stretched between 43 and 45 days despite strong factory dispatches, putting financial pressure on dealership working capital. Strong utility vehicle demand supported overall passenger car figures, whereas entry-level hatchbacks experienced persistent softness.
Evaluating October 2026 auto sales, FADA President Sai Giridhar expressed optimism for November retail expansion. According to FADA’s online member survey, over 51.65 per cent of auto dealers expect retail growth in November, supported by concentrated Dhanteras and Diwali purchasing schedules.
Ultimately, the latest registration figures highlight a temporary delay in festive purchasing rather than structural demand destruction. Executing strong November retail clearances remains critical for dealership networks seeking to normalize inventory holdings toward the targeted 30-day benchmark by year-end.
