PM Modi inaugurates 8 ponds and one STP in Varanasi

Under the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) for conservation and rejuvenation of river Ganga, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) of 10 MLD Capacity at Ramnagar in Varanasi. This is in continuation of the government’s efforts towards ensuring the setting up of a vast network of STPs for tapping the dirty water flow into Ganga.

Emphasizing on the construction of STPs that can meet the next 10-15 years requirement, the Namami Gange Mission is intended for the rejuvenation of the entire flow of the holy river. This STP at Varanasi is built on the latest Anaerobic-Anoxic-Anoxic (A2O) technology. The STP has been constructed with the cost of Rs 72.91 crore and by opening of this STP plant, the contaminated water from five drains will be stopped from falling into the river. The project involves operation as well as maintenance of the STP for the next fifteen years.

The Prime Minister also inaugurated the project of conservation and beautification of 8 ponds (holy kunds) of the city. The kunds including Dudhiya, Kalaha, Pahariya, Lakshmi, Anchkosi, Rewa, Bakharia and Kabir have been conserved, and beautified through ‘Clean Ganga Fund’ under NMCG. These man-made traditional water bodies act as important sources of rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge and drinking water for the region.
