Safe highways development gets a boost by $500 Million World Bank project

The Government of India has signed a $500 million project supported by the World Bank to develop safe highway corridors across Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Himachal radish. The green National Highways Corridors of total 783 km length are targeted to be constructed with a view to enhancing the Road Transport and Highways Ministry’s capacity.

This project will also support analytics to map the movement pattern and volume of freight on the National Highway network, besides identifying constraints to provide logistics solutions in an innovative way. The agreement was signed by Additional Secretary of the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, CS Mohapatra and Acting Country Director, India of the World Bank, Sumila Gulyani.

While this project will facilitate efficient transportation in the four states it will also widen and strengthen the existing structures with simultaneous construction of new pavements, bypasses and drainage facilities, besides introducing road safety features. Under this project, disaster risk assessment will also be undertaken on over 5,000 km National Highway network.

The World Bank loan has a maturity of 18.5 years.
