South Eastern Coalfields achieves record 100 million tonne coal dispatch

South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL), a subsidiary of Coal India, has achieved a record-breaking 100 million tonnes (MT) of coal dispatch for the fiscal year 2023-24. This remarkable achievement marks the fastest 100 MT coal dispatch in the history of this Chhattisgarh-based company since its inception. Notably, SECL has recorded a remarkable 17.65% growth compared to the previous year when it dispatched around 85 million tonnes of coal during the same period.

A substantial portion of this coal dispatch, over 80%, has been allocated to the power sector, with approximately 81 million tonnes of coal being supplied to power plants across the country. This achievement is particularly significant as it coincides with the upcoming festival season when power demand is expected to peak.

Contributing significantly to this achievement are SECL’s mega projects, including Gevra, Dipka, and Kusmunda, located in the Korba district. Gevra, the largest coal mine in the country, has made an impressive contribution of 30.3 MT, while Dipka and Kusmunda have dispatched 19.1 MT and 25.1 MT of coal, respectively. Together, these three mega projects account for over 74% of the total coal dispatch.

Furthermore, SECL’s Korea Rewa coalfield, known for housing old and underground mines, has played a notable role by increasing its coal dispatch by 20% compared to the previous year.

SECL stands as one of the largest coal-producing subsidiaries of Coal India, having produced a record-breaking 167 MT of coal in the previous fiscal year, contributing significantly to CIL’s total coal production. This year, SECL has set an ambitious target of 197 MT of coal production, aiming to further bolster its role in India’s coal sector.
