Summer crops offerd impressive YoY gains coupled with employment opportunities in India

It is due to the concerted efforts of the central government and the states, the summer crops in the country have gained prominence. The meticulous planning supported by the hard work of the farmers has resulted into year-on-year increasing trend of the summer crops in the country. In comparison to the last year the summer showing is 21.5 % higher this year. The initiatives taken by the ministry of agriculture and farmers welfare towards the scientific cultivation of the summer crops like pulses, oilseeds, coarse cereals have registered such an impressive growth.

The area of the total summer crop has increased to 73.76 lakh hetares from the earlier 60. 67 lakh hectares a year ago during the same period. This increase has been reported mainly from the states of Bihar, Utter Prades, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal, among others.

The farmers in these states have now started cultivating high yielding varieties of the crops for high productivity and economic gains. In the Zaid National conference held in January 2021, discussions with states were held on the topics around challenges, strategies and growth prospects. Thereafter the extension of staff was ensured together with timely arrangements of seeds and fertilizers for maximizing production. Even close coordination between Krishi Vigyan Kendras and State Agriculture Universities was ensured for technical support that turned vital at grassroots level.
