Coal sector creates significant employment opportunities over the last decade
India’s coal sector has been a key driver of economic growth and employment over the last decade. As of March 6, 2024, the country’s coal production has reached 900 million tonnes (MT), with projections indicating it may exceed 1 billion tonnes (BT) in the current fiscal year.
The sector, including Coal India Limited and NLC India Limited, employs 369,053 individuals and supports approximately 3.1 lakh pensioners. Coal India Limited and its subsidiaries alone have recruited 59,681 personnel from 2014 to February 2024, with NLC India Limited adding 4,265 individuals during the same period.
In the ongoing fiscal year, Coal India Limited and its subsidiaries have hired 5,711 individuals under the Mission Mode Recruitment initiative, while NLC India Limited has recruited 661 personnel. The sector’s growth is expected to continue driving employment, with mining activities also creating indirect employment opportunities.
Overall, the coal sector’s expansion is aimed at fostering inclusive growth and providing sustainable livelihoods across the country.
