Department of Telecom obtains Rs 2,307 crore from Airtel and Jio for assigning spectrum

The Telecom Department has got a windfall of Rs 2307 crore from telecom majors Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio for allotting spectrum to them after completion of Spectrum Auction 2021. After the auction they were issued frequency assignment to them. In a frequency harmonization exercise, spectrum blocks were assigned to the winners of the bid. The harmonisation of the spectrum more efficiently facilitates utilisation of spectrum, leading to improved quality of service for the consumers.

In the recently concluded Spectrum Auction 2021, the telecom service providers have acquired the overall quantity of 855. 60 MHz of spectrum in bands of 800, 900,1800 to 2000 MHz. Apart from Jio and Airtel, many other telecom service providers also acquired spectrum in auction and the total amount to be paid by the successful bidders is around Rs 77 thousand 820 crores.
