Dharmendra Pradhan launches ‘Skills on Wheels’ initiative to promote skilling in rural India

In a significant move towards enhancing skill development in rural areas, Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister for Education and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, along with Om Birla, Speaker of the Lok Sabha, inaugurated the ‘Skills on Wheels’ initiative today in collaboration with the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and IndusInd Bank. The launch ceremony marked the beginning of a transformative partnership aimed at empowering 60,000 youth over the next five years, with the primary goal of enhancing the livelihoods of rural households through skill training.

‘Skills on Wheels’ is an innovative initiative that involves a customized bus equipped with state-of-the-art tools, designed to take the ‘Skill India Mission’ to the farthest corners of the country. Speaking at the event, Pradhan emphasized that this initiative would specifically target rural youth, with a strong focus on empowering women, by imparting essential digital skills, thereby making them job-ready and prepared for the future.

The collaborative effort will see a specially outfitted bus crisscrossing aspirational and economically disadvantaged districts, effectively promoting the ‘Skill India Mission’ through ‘Skills on Wheels.’ The core aim is to raise awareness at the grassroots level about free skill training programs, enabling youth to radically transform their lives through comprehensive skill development. In line with this mission, the partnership with IndusInd Bank has been forged to empower the nation’s youth through the ‘Skills on Wheels’ project.

The primary objective of ‘Skills on Wheels’ is to enable a substantial number of young individuals to undergo industry-relevant skill training, which will not only enhance their theoretical and practical knowledge but also significantly improve their chances of securing better livelihoods. This initiative will play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between industry demands for skilled workers and the pool of unemployed youth. It will ensure that candidates, driven by a passion for specific job roles, can choose the most appropriate courses based on their academic background, aptitude, and existing skill sets.

‘Skills on Wheels’ is poised to bring about a positive and lasting impact on the lives of rural youth, contributing to their personal growth and the economic development of their regions.
