PMAY (U) would entail massive use of steel and cement

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) programme being run by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has so far achieved an important milestone of delivering 35 lakh houses while 67 lakh houses have been grounded, informed Hardeep Singh Puri, MoS, I/C, MoHUA and Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) in his address through a webinar organised on topic: Atmanirbhar Bharat: Fostering Steel Usage in Housing & Construction and Aviation Sector.
The minister added that the ambitious mission would have already consumed over 370 Metric Tonne (MT cement and 84 lakh MT steel in these housed completed or grounded so far. He said the scheme will also generate 3.65 crore jobs as well and that more than 600 million people will be living in urban centres by 2030, the deadline of the completion of this scheme. He also enlightened that in 27 cities across the country more than 900 km metro network is currently under construction which will further boost demand for cement and steel.

Puri highlighted that the construction of the entire planned inventory of houses under PMAY(U) will consume 692 lakh MT cement and 158 lakh MT steel which will considerably drive these industries to higher growth trajectory.
He stated that the creation of 100 Smart Cities under Smart Cities Mission will also drive demand in the steel and cement industries and that more than Rs 2 lakh crore worth 5,151 projects have already been identified under this mission. Puri added that construction in aviation sector is another demand driver for the steel and the cement industry. He also informed that 42 projects under smart solar and 70 projects under smart water schemes have already been completed.
