SIFCO starts construction of Food Processing Units in Sikkim

Sikkim IFFCO Organics Ltd (SIFCO), a joint venture between Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative (IFFCO) and the Sikkim government, has kick-started the construction of integrated food processing units in Sikkim. These plants will boost organic farming in the state and will be a great step forward in doubling farmers’ income as the produce will be directly procured from farmers. The products of SIFCO will be 100% organic and non-toxic which will thus promote a green Himalayan economy and sustainable agriculture. SIFCO will also start trading ginger through its overseas agencies in Italy, Germany, and other countries in Europe

Pawan Singh Tamang, Chief Minister, Sikkim had laid the foundation stone of these plants last year with the aim to boost organic farming in the entire north-eastern region. The construction of the plants started with Bhumi Pujan at the project’s site at Rangpo amid the presence of senior officials. Initially, ginger, large cardamom, turmeric and buckwheat will be processed as all these crops are Sikkim’s major produce. In order to market these products to various countries in the world, SIFCO has signed MoUs with international agencies.
