More than 5.5 crore taxpayers filed their income tax returns for Assessment Year 2026-27 before the July 31 deadline. The strong response reflected another year of growing ITR filing compliance across the country. The Income Tax Department confirmed the milestone through a post on X.
The department said more than 42 lakh returns were filed on July 30 alone.The surge highlighted the heavy rush during the final phase of the filing season. The July 31 deadline applied to individual taxpayers and entities that did not require account audits.
ITR filing gathers pace in final weeks
The ITR filing season witnessed rapid growth during the closing weeks. The department reported more than 1.7 crore returns by July 11. The total crossed 3 crore by July 22.
Filings exceeded 4 crore by July 27. The number reached 5 crore on July 30. It crossed 5.5 crore before the filing deadline ended. The steady rise reflected strong taxpayer participation and improved digital compliance.
Department urges timely and accurate filing
The Income Tax Department repeatedly advised taxpayers to avoid last-minute submissions.Officials encouraged early filing to reduce pressure on the e-filing portal.
They also advised taxpayers to verify financial information before submitting returns. The department recommended matching Form 16 with the Annual Information Statement.
Taxpayers were also asked to reconcile Form 26AS, bank statements and other income records.Officials said accurate reporting helps reduce errors and speeds up return processing. The ITR filing process becomes smoother when taxpayers verify all records in advance.
CBDT updates return forms
The Central Board of Direct Taxes introduced revised Income Tax Return forms for AY 2026-27. The updated forms include additional disclosure requirements.
These changes cover long-term capital gains and share buyback losses.The forms also require disclosures for certain trading transactions. Officials said the revisions improve transparency and strengthen tax reporting.
The changes also help taxpayers provide more complete financial information.
